Laser Tattoo Removal Before and After: Real Results and Treatment Progress

Entfernung von Laser -Tattoo vor und nach (1)

Laser tattoo removal is a gradual process. A tattoo may look lighter after the first few sessions, but substantial clearance often requires repeated treatment and sufficient healing time.

Results vary according to the tattoo’s color, age, ink density, pigment depth, body location, the client’s skin type, the laser wavelength, treatment parameters, and the interval between sessions.

This article reviews published clinical examples to explain what laser tattoo removal can look like over time. These research cases were not treated by Mico Aes and should not be interpreted as guaranteed results for any particular machine or client.

Individual results vary. Complete removal cannot be guaranteed. Laser tattoo removal should be performed by appropriately trained professionals in accordance with applicable local requirements.

Published Laser Tattoo Removal Before-and-After Cases

The following examples come from published research. They illustrate why treatment outcomes and the number of required sessions can differ significantly.

Published Case 1: Blue and Black Tattoos Treated With 1064 nm Lasers

A 2026 retrospective study compared Q-switched 1064 nm and picosecond 1064 nm laser treatments in 130 patients.

The study reported:

  • 73 patients received picosecond treatment.
  • 57 patients received Q-switched treatment.
  • The median number of sessions was three in the picosecond group and four in the Q-switched group.
  • Excellent clearance was reported in 78.1% of the picosecond group and 54.4% of the Q-switched group.
  • In the subgroup of 108 blue or black tattoos, excellent clearance was reported in 80% of the picosecond group and 55.8% of the Q-switched group.
  • The authors reported no severe complications during the study period.
  • Follow-up was limited to three months, and most tattoos were blue or black.

The study included photographs showing treatment progression after different numbers of sessions. These results apply to the treatments and patient population examined by the researchers. They should not be used to promise the same outcome with another device or treatment protocol.

Published Case 2: Tattoo Removal in Asian Skin

A published report followed six Korean patients with Fitzpatrick skin type IV. The tattoos were primarily black, with one case containing black and red pigment.

The patients received between one and six treatments with a 755 nm picosecond alexandrite laser. The researchers reported more than 75% clearance in almost all cases.

However, the study also reported partial post-inflammatory hypopigmentation in three of the six patients at the three-month follow-up. This is an important reminder that strong pigment clearance does not mean treatment is free of risk, particularly in darker skin types.

Published examples included:

  • A groin tattoo photographed before treatment and after two sessions
  • A back tattoo photographed before treatment and after six sessions
  • A black and red shoulder tattoo photographed before treatment and after one session
  • A hand tattoo photographed before treatment and after five sessions
  • A chest tattoo photographed before treatment and after four sessions
  • An arm tattoo photographed before treatment and after two sessions

Published Case 3: Longer Treatment Intervals

A 2024 case series documented 12 patients treated with Q-switched or picosecond lasers. Its photographs compared tattoo appearance across extended treatment timelines.

One example showed four treatments performed over 51 months, with the final photograph taken seven months after the last treatment. Other cases documented changes over long intervals after one or more sessions.

The report suggests that visible fading may continue during longer periods between treatments. However, this is a small case series rather than a controlled trial. It should not be used to establish one universal treatment interval for every client.

What Tattoo Removal May Look Like After Each Session

The response immediately after laser treatment is not the final result. Tattoo pigment normally fades over time as fragmented particles are processed by the body.

Immediately After Treatment

The treated area may develop temporary whitening or frosting. Redness, swelling, sensitivity, blistering, or crusting can also occur.

An immediate post-treatment image should never be presented as a completed result.

After One or Two Sessions

Some tattoos begin to show visible fading after the first sessions. The response may be uneven because ink density and pigment depth can vary within the same tattoo.

Dark pigments may respond differently from green, blue, yellow, white, red, or mixed pigments.

After Three to Five Sessions

Fading may become more noticeable, but visible pigment can remain. Some areas may respond faster than others, even when the same laser is used.

A photograph should state when it was taken. An image taken several months after a session cannot be compared fairly with an image taken immediately after treatment.

After Six or More Sessions

Some tattoos may become substantially lighter, while others require additional treatment. Dense professional tattoos, layered tattoos, scarred areas, cosmetic pigments, and certain colors may respond more slowly.

The number of sessions alone does not predict the final result.

Why Laser Tattoo Removal Results Vary

Tattoo Farbe

Different pigments absorb different wavelengths. Black and dark pigments are commonly treated with 1064 nm systems, while other colors may require different wavelengths.

Pigment ingredients are not always known, so treatment response can be difficult to predict from color alone.

Ink Density and Depth

Professional tattoos commonly contain dense pigment placed at a relatively consistent depth. Amateur tattoos may contain less pigment but can have uneven depth.

Tattoo Alter

Older tattoos may already have experienced natural fading. Age can influence treatment response, but it is not the only determining factor.

Tattoo Location

Body location may affect clearance. Skin characteristics, circulation, lymphatic drainage, and healing response differ across the body.

Hauttyp

Skin pigmentation affects treatment planning and the risk of hypo- or hyperpigmentation. Treatment parameters must be selected carefully, particularly for darker skin types.

Previous Treatment and Scarring

Previously treated tattoos may contain residual pigment at different depths. Fibrosis or scarring may also affect the response.

Behandlungsintervall

The skin requires time to recover between sessions. Additional fading can continue after the visible surface has healed.

A qualified treatment professional should determine the interval according to the client’s skin response and the treatment protocol.

Tattoo Color and Commonly Considered Wavelengths

The following table is a general educational reference. It is not a treatment protocol.

Tattoo FarbeCommonly considered wavelengthImportant consideration
Black and dark blue1064 nmOften used for darker pigments
Red and orange532 nmRequires careful skin-type assessment
Green, blue and purple755 nm, 785 nm or another suitable systemResponse depends on pigment composition
Yellow, white and skin-colored pigmentsVariiertSome pigments may respond poorly or darken

No wavelength should be selected solely from an online table. The tattoo, pigment response, skin type, device specifications, operator training, and local treatment requirements must all be considered.

How Many Sessions Does Laser Tattoo Removal Take?

There is no reliable universal answer.

The required number of sessions may depend on:

  • Tattoogröße
  • Pigment color
  • Ink density and depth
  • Professional or amateur application
  • Tattoo age
  • Body location
  • Hauttyp
  • Existing scarring
  • Previous removal treatments
  • Laserwellenlänge
  • Behandlungsparameter
  • Healing response
  • Time between sessions

Published cases range from visible improvement after one treatment to treatment courses requiring six, ten, or more sessions.

A consultation and test spot may be appropriate before establishing a treatment plan. Clients should not be promised complete clearance or an exact number of sessions based only on photographs.

Potential Side Effects and Complications

Expected short-term reactions can include:

  • Rötung
  • Schwellung
  • Temporary whitening
  • Zärtlichkeit
  • Blistering
  • Crusting

Possible complications can include:

  • Hyperpigmentierung
  • Hypopigmentierung
  • Infektion
  • Textural changes
  • Narben
  • Allergic or inflammatory reactions

A published case report documented an allergic contact dermatitis and widespread skin reaction following picosecond laser treatment of a multicolored tattoo. The authors associated the reaction with sensitivity to red tattoo pigment.

This does not mean that every client will experience an allergic reaction. It shows why treatment history, pigment colors, previous reactions, test spots, professional assessment, and follow-up matter.

Before trusting a laser tattoo removal comparison, check whether it provides:

  • The number of completed sessions
  • The laser technology and wavelength
  • The treatment interval
  • The date or stage of each photograph
  • The tattoo colors
  • The treatment area
  • The client’s skin type, when appropriately reported
  • Consistent lighting
  • The same camera angle and distance
  • Disclosure of cropping, editing, or enhancement
  • A statement explaining whether treatment is complete
  • The source and image-use authorization

A dramatic image without this information provides limited evidence.

Published Research Cases Versus Mico Aes Customer Cases

Published research cases and Mico Aes customer cases must be displayed separately.

Published Research Cases

These cases:

  • Were treated by independent researchers or clinics
  • May have used equipment from other manufacturers
  • Are included for education
  • Do not demonstrate the performance of a Mico Aes machine
  • Must include the original source and image license

Mico Aes Customer Cases

A Mico Aes case should only be published when the company has:

  • Written permission to use the images commercially
  • Confirmation of the machine model
  • Verified treatment details
  • Consent appropriate for online publication
  • Accurate session and timing information
  • Confirmation that the images were not misleadingly edited

If these requirements are not met, the case should not be presented as a verified Mico Aes result.

Choosing a Professional Tattoo Removal Machine

Before purchasing a tattoo removal system, clinics, med spas and distributors should evaluate:

  • Available wavelengths
  • Pulse duration and technology
  • Energy output and stability
  • Spot-size options
  • Cooling and safety features
  • Treatment parameter controls
  • Device documentation
  • Bedienerschulung
  • Technische Unterstützung
  • Warranty and maintenance
  • Local registration and licensing requirements

Published results from another manufacturer’s device should not be used to promise that a different machine will produce the same outcome.

Mico Aes can help professional buyers compare equipment configurations according to intended applications, target tattoo colors, business requirements, and local market needs.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Can laser treatment completely remove a tattoo?

Some tattoos may become substantially lighter or difficult to see. Others retain visible pigment. Complete removal cannot be guaranteed.

Wie viele Sitzungen sind normalerweise erforderlich?

The number varies considerably. Published cases include improvement after a small number of treatments as well as treatment courses requiring six, ten, or more sessions.

Which tattoo colors are most difficult to remove?

Response depends on pigment composition and the available wavelength. Yellow, white, skin-colored, green, blue, and mixed pigments can present particular challenges.

Does laser tattoo removal cause scars?

Scarring is a possible complication, but it is not the expected outcome of every treatment. Client assessment, operator training, appropriate parameters, infection control, treatment intervals, and aftercare all matter.

Can tattoo pigment cause an allergic reaction after treatment?

Allergic and inflammatory reactions have been reported, particularly with certain colored pigments. Clients should disclose previous tattoo reactions and obtain a professional assessment.

Does skin tone affect treatment planning?

Yes. Skin pigmentation affects wavelength and parameter selection as well as the risk of pigmentary changes.

Are published before-and-after photos proof that a machine will work for everyone?

No. A research photograph documents a particular patient, device, protocol, and follow-up period. It does not guarantee the same result for another client or machine.
